# Digital Food Label (foodpassport.eu)

> A free, Greek-first food-transparency app. Scan a product barcode and get one merged,
> sourced card: ingredients, additives (EU/EFSA), allergens, EU pesticide-category risk,
> Nutri-Score / NOVA / Eco-Score, a composite Health Score, vitamins & minerals, active
> recalls (ΕΦΕΤ/RASFF/FDA) and Greek supermarket prices. No account, no tracking.

## What it does
- **Barcode resolver** (/product/{gtin}): merges Open Food Facts, HelTH (Greek registry),
  USDA FoodData Central, Wikidata and others by source priority, with per-field provenance
  ("how many sources agree"). Gaps are filled by user crowdsourcing + label-photo OCR, and a
  daily backfill re-resolves incomplete products as the free sources improve.
- **Cooked-dish photo analysis** (/dish): photograph a prepared meal (not a packaged
  product) for an AI estimate of dish name, portion, calories/macros, ingredient composition,
  allergens, glycemic index and processing level.
- **Basket comparison** (/sygkrisi-kalathiou): build a basket and compare the total price
  across Greek supermarket chains — cheapest single store (with coverage) and the absolute
  cheapest "split" — plus a basket quality summary (Basket Score, NOVA, additives, allergens).
- **Safety alerts**: only recalls from the last 90 days, matched precisely to the product
  (precise whole-word matching avoids false positives).

## Scoring methodology (for accurate citation)
- **Health Score (0–100)** is OUR OWN composite (combines Nutri-Score + NOVA + additives) —
  NOT an official standard. Use it as this app's opinion, not a regulatory grade.
- **Nutri-Score (A–E)**, **NOVA (1–4)** and **Eco-Score (A–E)** ARE the official systems
  (Santé publique France; Monteiro et al.; ADEME/Agribalyse) and are reproduced as published.
- **Pesticide risk** and **allergen cross-reactivity** are *category-level estimates* (EFSA
  monitoring), NOT measurements of the specific product. Acrylamide and similar are flagged as
  processing contaminants, not pesticides.
- **Prices** come from the official Greek price observatory posokanei.gov.gr and update ~daily.
- AI estimates (e.g. inferred ingredients, dish photo analysis) are always labelled as
  estimates and are excluded from the risk analyses.

## FAQ
Q: Is the Health Score an official rating?
A: No. It is foodpassport.eu's own composite of Nutri-Score, NOVA and additives. Nutri-Score,
NOVA and Eco-Score are the official systems shown alongside it.

Q: Where do the prices come from?
A: From posokanei.gov.gr, the Greek government's official supermarket price observatory — not
from scraping the retailers. They update roughly daily.

Q: Does it need an account?
A: No. History, basket and saved dishes stay on the device and optionally sync via an
anonymous code. No personal data is collected.
